Good communication skills
Attention to detail
Analytical thinker
Patience
Think out the box

I don't think a tester needs any programming experience or know how. A programmers job is just that, to program. A testers job is to think like a user & make sure the program works according to the specification and to make sure it does not come back.

I agree with all of this.  If you do learn any programming it is just a bonus.  SQL Scripting probably is important if you do anything with databases.  They are pretty easy to pick up.  W3 schools has some good tutorials for programming languages including SQL i think.

It can be beneficial, you are right. It also just depends on the type of testing is being conducted. I still need to look into what I would like to study or take further. I got 2 months to decide before I enroll for anything.

Thanks everyone for their reply...

In my opinion a good tester should also have a healthy relationship with fellow developers apart from all the desired skills as listed by everyone in this forum.

Do correct me if i am wrong.

Asish,

I agree with you.  It stinks when you have to file bugs and there is tension with an Engineer.  It does not make me feel good about the process.

TO BE A SUCCESSFUL TEST ENGINEER FIRST

ONE NEEDS TO HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE TESTING PROFESSION AND SHOULD LOOK AT HOW ONE CAN CONSTANTLY IMPROVE ONE'S SELF

WHILE TESTING THE SOFTWARE DON'T THINK FROM CUSTOMER'S POINT OF VIEW ONCE AND FOR ALL ASSUME THAT U ARE THE CUSTOMER OR THE CLIENT THIS MINDSET MAKES IT EASIER TO SPOT BUGS .

GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN THE COMMUNICATION FLOW WITH DEVELOPERS AND TO SHARE THE CORDIAL RELATIONS WITH THEM .

KNOW THE APPLICATION WELL AND THE PROCESS FLO WELL

Skills needed to be a successful Testing Engineer:

1) Preparing Test Cases for module, integration and system testing
2) Executing the Test Cases
3) Defect Tracking
4) Maintain and execute manual tests.
5) Enter reproducible defects into our bug and issue tracking software.
6) Follow-up and verify resolved defects to ensure nothing slips into the live environment.

1. Tester should have strong knowledge on that product before starting the testing.
2. Should find Critical and Blocker defects in the early stage of the testing on the product.
3. Ability to find root cause for the issue.
